3 tips to make your training presentation slides more effective

 

For corporate trainers wanting to conduct an effective training session, engaging the audience is a critical element in effectively conveying your content. Use clear ‘action titles’

The most important part of the presentation is arguably the title. This is the first thing that the audience will read and the perfect opportunity to convey your key message clearly. Often times slide titles summarize the topic rather than stating what the audience should takeaway.
For example:

“Key market segments”

This carries almost no information and does little to grab the audience’s attention. Instead, try:

“The high-end coconut water segment drives only 20% of volume but 70% of profit”

This is called an ‘action title’ and it very clearly tells the audience what they should take away from the slide.

 

Keep it concise – less is more

On slides, bullets are king and full text paragraphs are typically not effective – who has time to read everything? However, writing powerful bullets is an art form that takes practice. As a starting point, consider these two suggestions:

 

  • Bold parts of your bullets to make it even easier for your audience to focus on the key message and retain the content.
  • Write symmetrical bullets;
    • each should occupy roughly the same number of lines
    • each should have the same grammatical structure

 

Be smart with visuals

Visuals are an easy way to create attractive, attention-grabbing slides. However, visuals need to be used carefully otherwise they can have opposite intent, looking awkward and dispersing the audience’s focus.

  • Stay legal: Ensure that you have the right to use your visuals; consider buying stock images or using those licensed under Creative Commons.

If you plan to share the slides with your attendees, your visuals need to be able to carry the message well without a narrative accompanying it.
  • Modify your visual: Consider using a simple editor like PowerPoint to improve the fit of your visual and message. Simple edits like overlaying text can have significant benefits.
  • Organize your visuals: Store your visuals in a repository so that they can be easily found and used again. If you build a lot of slides, consider using a slide library.
